At Dentistry on Parkdale, we understand the importance of routine dental care. However, patients with dental anxiety may avoid seeking the treatments they need for improving and maintaining oral health and wellness. Dr. Karen Ho and her team welcome patients in the Hamilton, ON area to learn more about the sedation used at the practice. This allows each patient a positive experience at the dental practice.
Sedation dentistry is an aspect of dental care that ensures patients who have dental anxieties are comfortable and at ease during their visits. While there are many sedation options available throughout many area dental practices, one of the most effective for those with mild to moderate anxiety is nitrous oxide sedation.
Patients who have dental anxieties and want to reduce their fear are encouraged to ask our team about nitrous oxide sedation. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide sedation allows the dentist to calm a patient while keeping them awake and coherent. Some liken the feeling of nitrous oxide as that of a few glasses of wine, where they are relaxed and able to answer questions and follow instructions, without the fear of pain or problems. Nitrous oxide is administered through the nose, and the amounts are monitored throughout treatment by our dental hygienists. Nitrous oxide can be removed from the patient’s body with the administration of oxygen through the same nose mask. This allows patients to transport themselves to and from their appointments, unlike other sedation methods used by dental practices in the area.
At Dentistry on Parkdale, we only offer services that are effective and safe. Safety is our primary goal, and we can talk to patients about what they can expect with nitrous oxide sedation. We can ask questions and determine if a patient is a proper candidate.
Patients choose nitrous oxide sedation for several reasons. It is:
Dr. Karen Ho understands that patients have different levels of anxiety and that no two patients are the same. Our practice encourages patients to learn more about this sedation method to see if it is right for their next appointment. Some patients choose to be sedated for more invasive treatments or appointments when extensive dental work is completed at once. Others may need nitrous oxide during more routine procedures such as evaluations and fillings. We can determine if a patient can benefit from nitrous oxide when they are open and honest with our team about their feelings. If our team is not aware of dental anxieties, we cannot provide our patients with the solutions they need to feel comfortable in the dental chair. Patients should never be embarrassed to speak to our team about their anxieties and find options to get the necessary work completed with ease!
