It is recommended by both the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) that children visit the dentist every six months for a cleaning, evaluation, and education on caring for their teeth and gums. Dr. Karen Ho and her team at Dentistry on Parkdale in Hamilton, Ontario, believe the same, requesting that parents bring their children to the dental office for a checkup and dental cleaning on the same recommended timeline. This sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles when parents are proactive about their child’s dental health and wellness.
Dental cleaning services are a fast and easy way to clean plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and gums of children. Along with a child’s dental checkup, this visit is critical to ensuring a healthy smile. It starts with a cleaning from our dental team, known as prophylaxis or a “prophy.” During this time, our dental hygienists will examine your child’s teeth and gums for signs of decay, infection, or any other issues. The hygienist uses specialized tools to gently remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth enamel. After this, they apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen the tooth enamel and protect it from further damage. This may also include the application of a dental sealant on the molars, which reduces the depth of the crevices in the teeth that can otherwise contribute to decay and disease.
If any issues are spotted during this appointment, our friendly dental team will educate you on the developed condition and how to address it. Your child may need additional services such as scaling and root planing or the placement of a dental filling.
If your child needs a dental checkup, evaluation, and cleaning, it is time to connect with Dentistry on Parkdale to work with Dr. Karen Ho and her team of professionals.
